Chapter Ten

HAPPY PLACE

Organization is my happy place. One by one, room after room is polished to a spit shine.

The last two days have been amazing. I keep journaling about how each day is the best day I’ve ever experienced and yet I am a liar because then the next day happens and then that becomes the best day.

Being able to debate on which days can be better has definitely not been part of my life story in a very long time.

At least I’m able to explore the house.

Torben never brings up the first night that I slept in the library.

He very much won his little challenge for himself. Not only do I like the tea, I look forward to it each night now. And he says I can borrow whatever I want from the library.

He must have taken that to heart because he got me started with a whole slew of crime thrillers and murder mysteries, among which are my favorite authors.

So far, we have a steady rhythm of both of us working during the day and then sharing a meal around the dinner table. Tor finds himself on the main floor of the house for tea breaks or some other excuse. A part of me hopes he wants to get to know me better, and not because I’m just here and am a distraction.

I haven’t visited his area since that first night, but he assures me I am welcome down there anytime.

I’m not sure I trust myself taking him up on that invitation.

After all, I’m still here for another few weeks and I’m really not the type of person to want to have a relationship with someone who is essentially her boss.

I broke down the project of cleaning up the house in multiple parts. It really didn’t much of anything at all. Dust seems to be nonexistent in the Otherkin world.

But I’m still making myself useful. And tomorrow, there will be a small luncheon here for the mayor and the Chamber of Commerce. I’d hoped to mingle with them and perhaps get the scoop on becoming a permanent resident here.

At the very least, extend my visa past the gala job.

Speaking of which, Nora gave me a more detailed email asking me to take care of possible overnight guests.

If they are anything like me, they will be impressed just by staying here.

I’ve always wanted to run my own bed-and-breakfast. And this house is perfectly situated for it. Being up here on the mezzanine where I can look over the entire first floor and great room is one of my favorite views of the entire house. Here I can daydream and have it filled with people who love to be together and especially who love to be in this house.

I try not to be too attached. Every minute, I need to remind myself that I don’t live here. It kills me, though, since this house is absolutely perfect for me.

If I were to pick my most favorite view would be this one, it would be the balcony off the master bedroom suite.
